뉴욕의 맨하탄은 언제나 세계적인 예술가들의 작품으로 넘쳐난다. 그러다 보니 예술가들의 재능을 한껏 음미해 볼 수 있는 곳이기도 하다. 뉴욕의 명소인 미술관과 갤러리는 순수 회화에서부터 설치, 미디어 등 모든 예술의 범주를 아우른다. 수에나의 작품도 그들과 함께 뉴욕을 누비고 있다. 수 차례의 개인 전시와 그룹전을 통해 독특한 작품으로 주목을 받고 있다.

수에나는 수년간에 걸쳐 빈 담뱃갑을 모으고 있다. 평평하게 펼쳐진 담배 갑은 사각형이나 원형 등 기존의 캔버스 형식을 벗어나 그 자체로 독특한 조형성을 보여준다. 최근에 뉴요커를 주제로 한 작품은 담뱃갑 위에 드로잉과 페인팅을 동시에 구사한 것이다. 지하철이나 공원, 길거리에서 만나는 사람들이 주인공이다. 국제 도시인 뉴욕의 특성 상, 인종의 구분은 불합리하다. 잠시의 기호품으로 쓰이다가 버려지는 담뱃갑은 차별 받는 사람들에 대한 안쓰러움을 상징적으로 보여준다. 수에나가 추구하는 인류애는 모든 사람이 존귀하므로 인종의 불평등으로부터 자유로움을 얻는 것이다. 수에나의 담뱃갑 페인팅은 이러한 생각으로 시작되었다.

Manhattan in New York City is always overflowing with artworks by world-renowned artists. So it is a place where we are able to savor the full flavor of their art. Loads of museums and galleries widely known as attractions in the city encompass every genre and category of art from painting to installation and new media. Suena’s work also contributes to shaping part of this New York scene. Her work has drawn attention at many solo and group exhibitions.

Suena has collected empty cigarette packs for several years. A flat unfolded cigarette pack itself shows its own unique form, departing from the preexisting form of canvases such as a square or circle. Her latest works feature New Yorkers on unfolded cigarette packs either in drawing or painting. She came across these packs in the subway, parks, or on the streets. Any distinction of races is senseless as New York City is fully internationalized. A cigarette pack discarded after being used for an item of personal preference can serve as a metaphor for one who is discriminated against. Suena pursues her love for humanity, thinking that everyone is precious and noble so everyone can be free from inequality. Her painting on cigarette packs was initiated by this idea.
