The 13th Korean Dance & Music Night

1. Buchaechum (부채춤)
Buchaechum is a traditional form of Korean dance also called fan dance, typically performed by groups of female dancers, to add to the spirit of celebrations. Dancers will form various images using fans, such as birds, flowers, butterflies, and waves.

-Performed by Jeesele Ahn, Won Ae Kim, JungWon Lee, Jeesele Ahn, Won Ae Kim of Gugak, choreographed by Yu Sun Kang

2. Danso (단소)
Danso is a Korean notched, end-blown vertical bamboo flute used in Korean folk music. The playing range is two octaves, going from low G to high G. The lower sounds are made by just blowing, whereas the higher ones are made by difference in the strength of the blowing.

3. Janggu Dance (설장고춤)
Janggu dancer straps a drum diagonally on the shoulder and combines bodily movements to instrumental performance of various rhythm. It is originally derived from Korean farm music play.

4. Haegeum (해금)
Haegeum is one of the most widely used instruments in Korean music and used in Madangnori, which is traditional folk performance. Its range of expression is wide despite having only two strings, from sorrowful and sad to humorous.

5. Arirang Medley (아리랑 메들리)
Arirang is a Korean traditional folk song, often considered the unofficial national anthem of Korea. There are about 3,600 variations of 60 different versions of the song.

6. Jindobuk Dance (진도북춤)
Jindobuk Dance used to be performed in Southern province of Korea, namely Jindo. The dance plays with a drum using both hands, and dynamic performance gives great amount of energy and excitement.

7. HwasunMoo (화선무)
HwasunMoo is dance inspired by the famous PungRyuDo painting from Chosun period. It portrays the elegant contemplation of noble artists and embodies the beauty of ancient Korean culture, creating a very picturesque and artistic interpretation.

8. Gyobang Salpuri (교방살풀이)
Salp’uri is performed to express beauty and sadness by bringing peace to the spirits of the dead and leading them to heaven. Its movement is based on pauses symbolizing thought that lead to actions, which are shown by snapping the arm and hand that hold the handkerchief.

9. KCC Singing Club Guest Appearance

10. Nanta (난타)
Nanta literally means wild beating, and this concept is turned into performance with rhythmic beating of drums with Korean traditional Samul nori music.

-Performed by Yaeri Roe, Anne Lee, YoungHee Lee

11. Workshop
Get to learn about by playing Nanta and Buchaechum.
